Youth crime and justice

How concerns about young people’s behaviour have been (mis)represented and sensationalised in broadcast media, making those concerns seem justified

Youth crime and the behaviour of young people has been an ever-present source of concern within society

This playlist shows how those concerns have been represented in media and how young people’s behaviour has been (mis)represented and sensationalised, making those concerns seem justified. The playlist includes films, TV programs, and documentaries that address or depict young people involved in crime and the response of criminal justice systems to them. Moving from the birth of the ‘teenager’ through to current representations of young people, media shows how our societal view of young people and youth crime has changed and how society feels that youth crime should be responded to.
