About the Youth and Horror Network

The Youth and Horror Network is a team effort by the University of Birmingham, Northumbria University, and partners like Into Film, Learning on Screen, and Flatpack Festival. Funded by the AHRC, this group of researchers, educators, and cultural experts aims to explore and improve understanding of how children and young people relate to the horror genre.

What does the Youth and Horror Network do?

  • Building a network | They bring together experts who study children, youth, and horror and create opportunities for networking, joint working and knowledge sharing.

  • Promoting understanding and insight | They improve public and scholarly understanding of, and new ideas around, horror’s role in young people’s lives and the ways in which horror impacts on their understanding of the world.

  • Learning from history | They are reconstructing a comprehensive historical understanding of the relationship between young people and horror.

  • Shaping narratives | Through developing and combining archival and memory research they will shape and reflect on existing and new narratives about the history of young people’s responses to horror.

  • Using horror media in conversations | Investigating how horror media can be used in educational, social and domestic contexts as a method for holding conversations with children and young people from a range of backgrounds about personal, historical and societal anxieties.

  • Providing access to resources | From workshops to a website, with learning materials and guides for other academics, parents, teachers, and guardians.
